Update on SF1740, the Education Policy Bill Last week, the House passed its version of SF1740, the education policy bill. The House amended the bill, including removing the Senate's restrictive homeschool provisions, and returned it to the Senate for concurrence. The Senate rejected the changes, leading to a conference committee to work through the differences and negotiate a final version. The education policy bill stalled due to unresolved differences before the session ended. However, all of the provisions in both versions, including the homeschool language, may reappear next year. We will keep monitoring.
Education Finance Bill The education finance bills also stalled. But as it's a budget year, a comprehensive budget, including education funding, must be finalized by July 1st to prevent a government shutdown. A private working group, likely including members of the Senate and House Education Finance Committees, is negotiating the final education finance bill. Since policy provisions could be included in the finance bill, we urge you to email all members of the Senate and House Education Finance Committees and request that they exclude the Senate education policy bill's restrictive homeschool provisions from the final education finance bill. |
