Capitol Highlights
As mentioned in the previous Capitol update, the Minnesota Legislature's regular session has concluded, leaving substantial work to be completed during a special session. This special session is likely to convene next week. If a budget is not signed into law by Sunday, the state will begin issuing layoff notices to certain state employees. Furthermore, if a budget agreement is not reached by July 1st, the government will face a shutdown. While the working groups have made progress on multiple bills, some bills are still being negotiated.
The House website has established a page to track the progress of the working groups, and the meetings are posted on the combined legislative schedule.
Final Education Bill
Current Status: The K-12 Education Working Group convened last week to review the proposed policy changes for public preschool through high school programs put forth by the Education Policy Conference Committee. It's important to note that this policy bill does not include provisions related to homeschooling. This week, the K-12 Education Working Group signed a working group agreement, which will be incorporated into the final bill, potentially including various policy provisions.
Next Steps: The final version of the K-12 Education bill will be introduced during the anticipated special session and presented to both the House and Senate, where it will be subject to a vote. For the bill to become law, it must be approved by both chambers and signed by Governor Walz.
We will be closely monitoring these developments in the days ahead. |
